Faking “Caller ID” is cheating by any standard. It’s like a stranger is wearing a mask to impersonate someone innocent and knocking at the door. And you have opened the door. Similarly when it displays “F.B.I.” or “I.R.S.” the Americans answer the call. But the caller is, in fact, a telemarketer. This is illegal.

Legitimate companies display their names, as they want to be identified to the callers. But the crooks are misusing this feature. New York Times has unveiled the paradox, “Automated dialing technology, known as robocalling, which lets telemarketers place thousands of calls per second, has added to the problem of caller ID spoofing. As laws have tightened, technology has made it easier for spoofers to cloak themselves and avoid getting caught.” Read full report.
