Prof. Rohan Samarajiva was recently interviewed by LMD.

In his view, an industry such as telecommunications should grow in two ways. Firstly, through structured reforms, which entail privatising state-held telecom companies and breaking international monopolistic control. Secondly, the industry should expand further through day-to-day policy implementation and regulation, both of which need transparency. “The private sector has to invest and innovate in telecommunications for expansion to take place and ensure that this growth is not skewed. On the part of the Govern­ment, it should realise that telecom infrastructure is not partisan. We should have a common agreement amongst all political parties that irrespective of the government in power, the efforts to improve telecom infrastructure will prevail as a common agenda across party politics,” he urges.
