Half of LIRNEasia will be in Yangon next week. Together wiith our lead partner MIDO and our principal funder IDRC, we will conduct a series of activities that mark a deepening of our three-year old engagement with Myanmar’s reform process intended to build a modern network nation. The work program is described here.

The highlight of the week’s activities will be the presentation of the results of our baseline survey in Yangon and Nay Pyi Taw. I will be speaking on universal service at the A4AI event on the 27th. Radhika Wijesekera will be representing us at the A4AI partners meeting, Helani Galpaya, Nilusha Kapugama and Chiranthi Rajapakse will be completing the analysis of the field work they have been conducted throughout Myanmar on the gender aspects of ICT use in Myanmar. We will meet with the Myanmar Computer Federation and also plan our activities on fostering app innovation.

One of the most important things we will do during this week is the mentoring of our partner MIDO so that we become superfluous after 2017.

  1. It would be quite useful to know about the competition policy being laid out in designing modern networked nation. How are issues dealt with in developing common backbone infrastructure to benefit from economy of scale through demand aggregation by preventing monopoly and vertical foreclosure strategy option? What are policy options being weaved to prevent the accumulation of market power which may warrant antitrust regulation? Inputs to get answer to these and other pertinent issues in designing policy framework for such an imperfect industry will be highly appreciated…
