Il-haam is a PhD student in sociology at the University of Dublin, Trinity College, Ireland. She spent three months as a research intern at LIRNEasia in late 2009, developing a framework for classifying universities in Sri Lanka and South Africa, with the aim of contributing to the understanding of university systems in developing countries. Il-haam says her work at LIRNEasia has not directly influenced her current occupation but her time at LIRNEasia has contributed towards broadening her cultural awareness.
“The experience of living in Sri Lanka during the internship helped me with my PhD research, which included ethnographic research in a low income country in Southern Africa. I would also like to mention that I learned many things by working with Dr Sujata Gamage, who supervised my internship,” she says.
