Mobile 2.0 describes the next wave of applications and services – the use of mobiles for more than voice. On the 26th and 27th of April 2010, LIRNEasia together with the PTA co-hosted a successful expert forum in Islamabad, Pakistan. A multitude of themes were discussed over the four sessions, when the experts presented their research and cases to an audience that consisted of those representing regulators, mobile operators, government agencies and the media from nine countries of the Asia Pacific region.

“This is one of the highly effective tools for achieving financial inclusion. But the system is suffering because of the lack of interest among government agencies. There needs to be a policy change to take the model further and make the system financially viable,” says IIM-A Professor and LIRNEasia‘s Senior Research Fellow, Subhash Bhatnagar, PhD.

The research is a part of a larger study conducted by LIRNEasia on the use of mobiles for more-than-voice.

The Economist has a long piece on how barcodes and mobiles interact.

NEGOTIATING his way across a crowded concourse at a busy railway station, a traveller removes his phone from his pocket and, using its camera, photographs a bar code printed on a poster. He then looks at the phone to read details of the train timetable displayed there. In Japan, such conveniences are commonplace, and almost all handsets come with the bar code-reading software already loaded. In America and Europe, though, they are only just being introduced.

Our warm congratulations to Professor Bhatnagar and his co-author.

Subhash, who is leading the work on one of our Mobile 2.0 components, had a 20 minute one-on-one with the Chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Bill Gates.

ICTD 2009 was attended on a scholarship by Nirmali Sivapragasam of LIRNEasia. Nuwan Waidyanatha also participated with a display table and got media coverage as well.

LIRNEasia hosted a Workshop to discuss the policy level implications and business level possibilities of using ICTs to reduce transaction costs in the agricultural value chain as well as to improve traceability and enhance quality of products sold. The Workshop brought together key stakeholders consisting of policy makers, private and public sector participants and researchers, both in agriculture and ICT. It was based on the pilot projects conducted by LIRNEasia in 2007, which was discussed in detail at the Workshop.
