Researcher

Nirmali is primarily involved in research exploring the demand for ICTs among low-income earners or the BOP. Her most recent research examines the significant decline in the use of public phones and the corresponding uptake of mobile telephony. She has also explored the use of cost-saving strategies among BOP, such as the user-driven “missed calling” phenomenon, and its likely economic and policy implications for users, operators and policymakers.
She contributes to the Mobile Price Benchmarks study, conducted bi-annually, which compares baskets of mobile prices across thirteen countries in South and Southeast Asia. She also assists in the co-ordination of the Mobile 2.0 study, which explores the use of mobiles for more-than-voice services. Administratively, she co-manages the LIRNEasia website.
Before joining LIRNEasia, Nirmali interned at the Institute of Policy Studies of Sri Lanka, the country’s leading economic policy think-tank. She has also worked as a part-time Field Research Officer for Nielsen Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd, where, in 2005, she conducted field research for the World Bank’s global Investment Climate Assessment study in the Maldives.
Nirmali holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Management with First Class Honors from the London School of Economics, University of London (External).
