Nirmali is primarily involved in research on Teleuse at the Bottom of the Pyramid (T@BOP). She has explored the use of cost-saving strategies, specifically, the use of missed calls at the BOP and its likely economic and policy implications for users, operators and policy-makers.
She contributes to the Mobile Price Benchmarks study, conducted bi-annually, which compares baskets of mobile prices across thirteen countries in South and Southeast Asia. She also assists in the co-ordination of the Mobile 2.0 study, which explores the use of mobiles for more-than-voice services. Administratively, she co-manages the LIRNEasia website.
Previously, Nirmali interned at the Institute of Policy Studies of Sri Lanka, where she was attached to the Industry, Public Enterprise Reform and Regulatory Policy Division. Nirmali has also worked as a part-time Field Research Officer for Nielsen Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd. In 2005, she conducted fieldwork operations in the Maldives for a global Investment Climate Assessment study, commissioned by the World Bank.
Nirmali holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Management with First Class Honors from the London School of Economics, University of London (External) .
