As Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) become increasingly embedded in everyday systems, concerns around data protection, privacy, and accountability are gaining urgency. A new 2024 report, ‘Beyond the Hype: Realising Responsible AI through Data Protection in South and Southeast Asia,’ examines how existing data protection laws in the region respond to the risks emerging from AI adoption.

Recognising data as the backbone of AI and ML systems, the report focuses on the evolving challenges of data protection as AI governance takes centre stage. It analyses the data protection frameworks of Indonesia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, assessing how effectively these laws can mitigate risks associated with AI deployment.

The report was developed by EngageMedia as part of the Greater Internet Freedom project, with contributions from Merl Chandana, Research Manager and Team Lead, Data, Algorithms, and Policy (DAP) at LIRNEasia; Nusrat Aditi Zaman, Programme Coordinator at Digitally Right Limited; and Sinta Dewi Rosadi, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Padjadjaran, Indonesia, who served as researchers on the report.

This publication represents Draft Zero and is intended as a working document. Feedback and contributions are welcome and can be shared via info@engagemedia.org.
