Chanuka Algama

Researcher

Chanuka is a Researcher with the Data, Algorithms, and Policy (DAP) team at LIRNEasia. He holds a BSc (Honours) in Computer Science from the University of Kelaniya and has a keen interest in machine learning and artificial intelligence, with a specific focus on applications of computer vision. His recent achievement includes winning 2nd place at IEEE’s Standards for Secure and Trusted Learning Systems competition held in Valencia, Spain. At LIRNEasia, his current work revolves around using remote sensing for public policy-related applications and building machine learning datasets at the intersection of climate change and energy.

In addition, Chanuka actively contributes to various projects. He is involved in data engineering for the Lacuna project, which aims to build a machine-learning dataset on household electricity consumption in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, he is engaged in a project that applies machine learning techniques to satellite imagery data, generating geospatial maps for climate change studies, urban planning, and policymaking. Chanuka also utilises call detail records in conjunction with remote sensing data for various purposes, including mapping socioeconomic status in Sri Lanka.
