Kasun Amarasinghe

Kasun Amarasinghe, a Research Fellow at LIRNEasia, is also a Senior Research Scientist in the Data Science for Public Policy Lab at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). Kasun studies the use of Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the public sector and focuses on three areas:

(1) building and deploying AI/ML systems in collaboration with government agencies and non-profit organisations in different policy domains,

(2) conducting research in responsible AI disciplines such as explainability and algorithmic fairness, and

(3) developing and conducting training programs to train students, data scientists, and policy practitioners to scope, develop, and evaluate AI systems developed for public policy use-cases.

Before his current position, Kasun was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at CMU and received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Virginia Commonwealth University, with his doctoral thesis focused on Explainable AI in Cyber-Physical Systems. Kasun also holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Computer Science from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka.
