Madhushan Ramalingam

Data Science Researcher

Madhushan Ramalingam is a Data Science Researcher at LIRNEasia, where he explores the intersection of artificial intelligence, social good, and ethical technology.

At LIRNEasia, Madhushan contributes to several cutting-edge projects. He works on countering misinformation with generative AI tools in low-resource language contexts, a project funded by IDRC. This involves developing robust data pipelines and experimenting with both open-source and proprietary state-of-the-art large language models. He is also engaged in studying patterns associated with virality in Sri Lankan tweets, funded by The Asia Foundation, and leads efforts to build an AI-assisted ethical spell checker to support the journalism industry in Sri Lanka.

His research interests span ethical and explainable AI, data science for social good, and uncertainty awareness in AI for medical diagnosis. Madhushan is deeply motivated by the potential of AI not just to innovate, but to make technology more trustworthy, inclusive, and impactful for communities.

He holds a BSc (Hons) in Computer Engineering from the University of Peradeniya and is currently reading for an MSc in Data Science and AI at the University of Moratuwa.

Before joining LIRNEasia, Madhushan worked as a Software Engineer at Enactor Limited, a UK-based fintech company, where he practiced software engineering enhancing skills developing large-scale systems. His move into research was driven by curiosity and a passion for using data science to solve real-world challenges.

Outside of research, Madhushan finds joy in writing and consuming comedy, and is an avid fan of cricket, the gentlemen’s game. Know that his work is powered by equal parts of curiosity, creativity, and fun.
