Sri Lanka Minister wants to ban mobile use by children

In the great tradition of banning everything that moves, Minister Sumedha Jayasena has stated that the government is considering banning the use of mobile phones by children.   Isn’t this an unjustified intrusion by government into a decision best left to parents?   And doesn’t Mrs Jayasena have more important things to do, like enforce existing (and ignored) prohibitions on child labor?

In a country where law and order is deteriorating, the government has no business trying to take away the right of parents to be in touch with their children.

  1. If the cellphones are used for pornographic stuff, why can’t they allow at least entry level phones which gives kids only calling and SMS facilities? They are low cost as well. Communication is very important in this fast moving world.

  2. If one is member of a 100 cabinet holding some obscure portfolio one has to do certain things just for visibility. Otherwise how can ‘Loku Sir’ know about their existence? I think this move too is something like that. Do we have to take it so seriously?
