On 6 November 2025, the Centre for Communication Governance (CCG) at National Law University Delhi hosted a hybrid, day-long event on “Operationalising AI Safety” at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. The event served as a Pre-Summit Event of the India AI Impact Summit 2026 and focused on advancing AI safety governance, with particular attention to the role of AI Safety Institutes (AISIs) in the Global South.
The programme included the launch of the report “Exploring AISIs for the Global South”, along with a panel discussion and two roundtable sessions. The event brought together around 100 participants, representing civil society, academia, industry, and government, both from India and internationally.
LIRNEasia’s CEO, Helani Galpaya, was invited as a panellist to the main panel discussion, “Operationalising AI Safety”, which explored the conceptions of AI safety, what it involves, and how it can be operationalised, particularly through AISIs.
LIRNEasia Research Manager and Team Lead, Data, Algorithms, and Policy (DAP), Merl Chandana, also participated as a speaker in the roundtable discussion on AI Safety in the Global South, which examined current developments in emerging technologies and AI safety and AISI initiatives across different regions of the Global South.
The event provided a platform to build a multi-stakeholder network to strengthen AI safety capacity and inform global safe AI frameworks with perspectives from the Global South.
