Helani Galpaya was a speaker at the panel discussion titled “Democracy in the Digital Age: How Canada Advances Internet Freedom for All”.

The event was organized by Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and the International Development Research Center (IDRC).

It was a conversation among experts that will took stock of Canadian efforts to advance democracy in the digital age, and engaged experts in a discussion on what’s next for Canada’s international engagement. The Government of Canada is championing digital inclusion at home and globally, including through the 2022 Chairship of the Freedom Online Coalition (FOC) – the only multilateral coalition dedicated to defending internet freedom. As FOC Chair, Canada launched a multi-stakeholder process to develop a set of high-level principles for freedom online, referred to as the Ottawa Agenda

Speakers included Jenna Carter (Global Affairs Canada), Daniela Schnidrig (Global Partners Digital), Rachel Adams (Research ICT Africa) ,  Helani Galpaya (LIRNEasia) and Ruhiya Seward (IDRC).

Opening remarks were made by Tara Denham (Director-General, Office of Human Rights, Freedoms and Inclusion, Global Affairs Canada) and Caroline Ford (Director of Democratic and Inclusive Governance, IDRC).

Helani’s interventions drew upon LIRNEasia research related to platform governance, in particular the challenges of countering the information disorder.
