For Google, Advertising and Phones Go Together – New York Times
Google wants to extend its dominance of online advertising to the mobile Internet, a small market today, but one that is expected to grow rapidly. It hopes to persuade wireless carriers and mobile phone makers to offer phones based on its software, according to people briefed on the project. The cost of those phones may be partly subsidized by advertising that appears on their screens.
Google is expected to unveil the fruit of its mobile efforts later this year, and phones based on its technology could be available next year.
Some analysts say that the Google project’s affect on the wireless industry is not likely to be as profound, at least initially, as that of Apple’s iPhone, whose revolutionary look and features have redefined consumer expectations for mobile phones.

Told you so. :-)
Not only the cost of the phone, but also the cost of GPRS may come down.
Now, imagine the potential of VoIP then….!

Btw, I’m still blocked. The problem is the spam filter on wordpress. A lot of people are complaining.

Although I think the g-phone will have an impact on mobile telephony, the idea of introducing open source to the mobile world actually comes from open moko ( http://www.openmoko.org/ and http://www.openmoko.com/ see also the article in the Economist http://www.economist.com/science/displaystory.cfm?story_id=9531007 ). It’s already out for developers and will be available for consumers next month. It has wifi, gprs, gps and scores of applications being developed for it.
Government of Sri Lanka’s new Bill on ‘Online safety’ – comparison with Singapore
A new Draft Bill on ‘Online safety’ was recently published in the Gazette of 15th September (issued on 19th September). As stated, the objectives of the Bill are to ‘to establish an online Safety Commission; to make provisions to prohibit online communication of certain statements of fact in Sri Lanka; prevent the use of online accounts and inauthentic online accounts for prohibited purposes; make provisions to identify and declare online locations used for prohibited purposes in Sri Lanka; and to suppress the financing and other support of communication of false statements of fact.
How to effectively address problems posed by harmful user-generated content (and why Sri Lanka’s Online Safety Bill must be withdrawn)
"Safeguarding freedom of speech and expression is so important that it is constitutionally protected in most civilised countries, as it is in Sri Lanka. Legislators seeking to address the new problems posed by rapid and articulated dissemination of user generated content must first decide what the priority is.
