Take a taxi and pay with your credit card

It appears users of Kangaroo cabs don’t need to worry about having enough cash in their wallets.  At least, with a credit card they don’t need to worry about cash.  Starting this month, users are able to pay taxi-fare using a credit card. The taxi driver will swipe the passenger’s credit card on a small gadget attached to his smart phone, the payment receipt will be sent as an SMS to the user’s phone (the person who is making the transaction will have to give the mobile number to the driver).

The device is called MoMo. It is introduced to Sri Lanka by Hatton National Bank (HNB).  MoMo uses a mobile phone based, point of sale (POS) technology and it is equipped with EMV (EMV stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa) technology for chip based card acceptance.

The difference between MoMo and the handheld POS machine carried by pizza hut guy is that this does not need another GSM SIM card but any smartphone with a data connection will serve the purpose. A merchant such as Kangaroo, has to have a smart phone and HNB will provide the small hand held MoMo device, that will work on any data connection (2G, 3G, Wifi and etc.) provided through the smart phone.
