Research Launched: Social Safety Nets and the State of Poverty in Sri Lanka

LIRNEasia held an event titled Social Safety Nets and the State of Poverty in Sri Lanka on Wednesday 7 June 2023 in Colombo, to present the findings of a recent nationally representative survey of 10,000 Sri Lankan households and qualitative research across 13 districts conducted by LIRNEasia. The event, attended by Hon. Shehan Semasinghe, State Minister for Finance, began with opening remarks by Prof. Rohan Samarajiva.  LIRNEasia’s Gayani Hurulle (Senior Research Manager) and Tharaka Amarasinghe (Statistician) presented the research findings. A panel discussion moderated by Dhananath Fernando (CEO – Advocata Institute) followed, with speakers B. Wijayaratne (Chairman, Welfare Benefits Board), Karin Fernando (Team Lead- Sustainable Development – CEPA), and Gayani and Tharaka. Stakeholders from various government, multilateral organisations and civil society attended the event.
